Are you a member in a band? Have you ever done session work? What happens if your band breaks up, stops touring or needing a drummer? What if the band takes an indefinite hiatus, or even a temporary once? When the cash stops coming in and the river runs dry, do you find yourself with a skill that can't be applied to much other than the one band you've spent your time practicing with,? Or do you have the chops, versatility and relationships to go out and land other gigs?
This is exactly where Chris Hornbrook (Senses Fail, Poison the Well + more) found himself when his band needed to take some time off, but he didn't. With an itch to play and a desire to expand on his chops (while paying rent) Chris landed a gig with Senses Fail, filling in for various other acts behind the kit along the way and keeping him occupied when his primary project isn't out playing shows or making any dough.
We had to bold that because I know so many of you are interested. But I also wanted to teach you a lesson (This is Jake speaking)... I ask Emily the endorsement question near the very end of the Podcast because that's the way it should be. What we're getting at is that many things should come before a Cymbal deal. This means forming a relationship with reps at company's, then, over time, demonstrating how you add value to the company and doing so in a humble and confident manor. There's no rush, and rushing will most certainly delay the process.
Being a good enough drummer is often undeserving of an endorsement deal. Now you may think drummers in specific bands aren't good but....

Hi there! I'm Chris Reeve, drummer for the band FILTER. I also love to teach this wonderful art, and in my 13 years as a full time educator I've seen it all. With this experience, I have devised my own methods for successful teaching; which, in my opinion, also transfer into successful learning. Please allow me to share some insight on being both a great teacher and student, from the beginning.
From an early age, I was very interested in psychology and even found myself at a crossroad at age 16 between that and music. I started my senior year gearing up for a career as a psychologist, but after seeing Cirque Du Soleil- the next day I quit calculus, physics and the rest of my TEE studies (Australian SATs) in pursuit of my passion. Now, I get paid to tour the world and play drums - so I'm not sad about that decision at all (not saying you should do exactly that, it was just my decision at the time). That interest in psychology always stuck with me though; and with that came my ideas for learning - not just teaching.
My name is Brandon Pertzborn and I play drums for Black Flag and Doyle (from the Misfits). I’m from Dallas, TX and currently reside in Los Angeles, CA.
I’m frequently asked how I joined Black Flag and Doyle at a young age and what I would recommend to someone who is ready to step out and join the music scene and get their name out there.
I uncover a bunch of that in this Podcast episode with Jake. Feel free to listen a long or read below to get more of my thoughts on making it as a drummer. Here's also a shot of the restaurant Jake and I recorded the Podcast in.

This podcast is brought to you by 180 Drums. Yes, I am one of the founders of 180 Drums and I couldn't be more excited that we offer an Online Drum Lesson Website unlike anything you and I have experienced prior. There are a lot of resources to learn the drums, but nothing like this. I felt tired of scouring the internet for great content amidst all the good and okay stuff. We wanted to build something that would truly take your drumming to another level. Let us know how we're doing by starting your life changing experience learning the drums... You're minutes away. :)
Enjoy!
